Welcome Life Long Learners! I am delighted that you are participating in my course. I am looking forward to getting to know you all and being part of this adventure with you. This course introduces attendees to the canon of Italian literature. We will explore the works of Plutarch, Boccaccio, Dante among many other poets. We will also draw strong attention to how their literary contributions reflect the development of the Italian civilization.





Course Outline

Introduction to Italian Literature and Civilization Mini.

The meeting times for this course will be Fridays from 11:00am—12:00noon from October 1, 2021 — October 15, 2021. All meetings will be held via zoom. Study questions will be provided prior to each meeting. All reading material will be made available to you via this webpage. Here is a breakdown of what our schedule will be:

    Week
  1. During the first week we will look at short samples of the early notable Italian writers. These include, and are not limited to: Dante, Boccaccio, Plutarch, Guinizelli, Cavalcanti among others. This week will highlight important themes such as religion, natural philosophy and ideas of love.

  2. This week will continue with a look at the works of Machiavelli and the development of political philosophy. Our focus will also shift towards the natural sciences and the writings of Galileo and other renowned scientists.

  3. Closing. During this meeting we conclude the course with a look at significant themes found in various samples from the 18th century to modern Italian literature.
